Subject: RYTHM Foundation Presented Cash Donation to Acehnese Students
3 November 2006

The RYTHM Foundation returned to Aceh on November 3-4, 2006, to present a cash donation to Acehnese students in Lhokseumawe as part of a 3-year scholarship programme instituted during RYTHM’s tsunami relief efforts.

Represented by trustee Mr. Bernhard H. Mayer, and Wita Dahlan, CCM, the trip began with a two hour flight from Jakarta to Medan. Joined by 4 IRs from Medan, they drove another seven hours to Lhokseumawe city, north of Banda Aceh.

Nestled in the middle of the Sumatran coastal line between Medan and Banda Aceh, Lhokseumawe plays an important role in trade and distribution for the Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam province. Large organisations like Asean Aceh Fertilizer and Exxon have large operations in this area, yet poverty is conspicuous. The difference in development rates between the country's capital and this district, as well as concern for their natural resources, have led to the formation of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM).

For decades, until the massive tsunami devastated the area in December 2004, there were periodic armed conflicts between the Indonesian military and local forces fighting for greater separation from the central government, making Lhokseumawe one of the three Indonesian hot spots (along with East Timor and Papua). Over the decades the fight has destroyed many lives, hurt the economy, and created many widows and orphans.

Education facilities in this environment are inadequate. Now that a peace agreement has been signed and peace has come to the district, the area is slowly being rebuilt. However, there are still some poor communities which have been overlooked by relief efforts and local NGOs. Amongst those suffering are kids at Kec. Bandardua, Kab. Bireun, two hours away from Lhokseumawe. This is where the RYTHM Foundation team arrived early on 4 November.

The team reached the coastal village of Bandardua to meet 182 students and orphans from several primary schools gathered at LPI Dayah Riyadhul Mubarak Al-Idrisiyah with many of the students coming from other remote villages. In his remarks, Mr. Mayer informed the kids that the RYTHM Foundation, with the cooperation of Rotary Pforzheim RF, granted the funds that are helping them with their studies, and that they have brothers and sisters in other parts of the world who care about them. Each student received a year of school fees directly from RYTHM Foundation team.

In September last year, the RYTHM Foundation paid out school fees to 120 Acehnese students in Medan and Aceh.

Subject: RYTHM Foundation and Quest Strategies to Join Rainbow Trek
30 October 2005

Rythm Foundation(RF) is proud to announce that we raised HK$ 50,000 through the Rainbow Trek, a 25 km walk along the trail starting at Hong Kong's famous Peak. The trek was in aid of a charity organisation in Hong Kong that works towards the education of autistic children. Rythm Foundation sponsored three teams consisting of employees from QuestNet's Hong Kong office as well as a few outstation visitors. The 25 km trek took nearly 6 hours to complete and meandered over uphill and down, rocky terrain, muddy tracks, and narrow jungle paths. A brilliant achievement by our teams considering most of the participants were just volunteers with no prior training in trail hiking over a difficult path. QVI MD, Mr.Joachim Steffen from Singapore who was in Hong Kong on business was kind enough to join the young trekkers and provided them with much needed encouragement each time the trail got difficult.

After a six hour trek, the 13 member team successfully completed the trail and raised HKD 50,000. Patrick Tsang, a member of RF's working committee gave a moving speech about Rythm Foundation's involvement with worthy causes and congratulated the rest of the teams on completing the trek. Malou Caluza and Judy Wu did a great job of organising the event and providing all participants with T- shirts, caps, food and water at the end of the exhausting trail.
